Dip Dye

Dip dyed sheets was actually one of my first plans for a DIY on the blog. Funny story- I used some packets of dye I found with no markings. Probably wasn't fabric dye since it all washed out and the sheets were white again. I got some new dye for Christmas so here's a little run through if you'd like to make some pretty bedding.

You will need:

~Dye (I used idye "pink" and "pumpkin", it's best to get colours that mix nicely together)
~Non iodised salt
~White cotton sheets
~Buckets
~Rubber gloves

Boil about 6 litres of water per bucket. Pour water into the buckets and add a cup of salt and a sachet of dye to each. Pre wet the sheets then begin dipping them into the coloured water.

Here are a couple of ways you can choose to dye your sheets:

Gradient~ dip one end of the sheet into the dye then hang it up by the white end so all the dye runs down to the end (lighter up the top, darker down the bottom).

Stripes~ loop the sheet so it resembles a concertina  and dip each fold into alternating colours.

Mixing~ dip the same area into both buckets so you create a new hue when they mix.

Leave the sheets to dry and then to sit and let the dye set. I left mine for a couple of hours then we washed then with some extra salt in the machine.

The colours all bled into each other and they became a bit pastel. Now they remind me of strawberry and mango gelato. I reckon if I'd washed the sheets by hand without getting the white parts wet, they would've stayed white rather than turning orange.

I love having new sheets and I love DIYs so this was a really fun project. What are you making at the moment?
